3D modeling is creating an object from a three-dimensional model using specific computer modeling programs. You can find it in several sectors, including the movie, medical, animation, gaming, and architecture industries. The film industry uses 3D characters and props for animated and real-life motion pictures. The physical object can be created manually or by scanning and then defined by texture mapping.
In recent times, 3D printers are used to create miniature 3D models. But what of when you need a more oversized replica of a small object? At Big Apple Props, we delight in custom-creating new and original 3D props. But, what are 3D characters and props?

Sculpting 3D Characters and Props

Lots of sculptors draw a grid system on the foam as a guide before starting the sculpting process. They do the gridding by either free-hand drawing or by using a maquette (French scale model). At the initial stage of sculpting, you can cut the Polystyrene foam with a heated wire or a chain saw. Then you can fine-tune and sand the 3D model using different types of small hand tools such as electric knives, handsaws, and “Dremel” tools.
After sculpting your 3D character or prop, you can use epoxy clay to add specific details into your foam model. These details are those that would have been very difficult to directly carve into the foam. You can also use acrylic to emulate wrinkled skin for a character. You will need to seal the surface and apply protective coatings and finishes.
